Peter Hammill - Time Heals (chords)

Chord transcription by Mikayel Abazyan mikayelabazyan@yahoo.com

Playing tips

The usual notes: this is piano notation and might sound wrong on guitar
because of the different inversions. Lowercase letters indicate minor
chords, though I've now got round to adding an "m" most of the time.
C/g means a C major chord with a G as a bass note. Hammill does
that a lot...

          am dm am E
Thinking back, it seems that I can lie beside you like I never truly did

   F G am
In afterglow - no afterwords at all.

am F/a am F/a am G6
Only writing love songs when it's gone and dead

F dm/a F dm/a F em
only paying words out, strings of half-forgotten sentiment.

F em
I mean...

em F
I meant...

f e f e f b f e f e f b (single notes over an E bass)
I never really quite could say the way it was.

     am F
The first time that we met I thought 'I bet that she's the one"

          Esus4 Esus4/7 E
but I was talking to myself than, as al - ways.

    am F
As time went by our steps entwined, unwritten lines grew taut, and I

Esus4 Esus4/7 E
tried to find a way to make it all safe.

am G
Into the play - what a production!

F E
Into the days and ever more suction

     am G
You hold me close, hold me farther

  F E5+ E
away from yourself - I make me a mar-tyr,

     E/e D/d C/c E/b
for pain and love go hand in hand...

     am/a /g F
And hand in hand go you and my friend, you are his and I am yours

    Esus4 Esus4/7 E
and (I) just cannot evade you.

    am F
My days are dream, my nights unseemly, stolen moments all I live for,

      Esus4 Esus4/7 E
but theft is no way to persuade you

    am G
to come with me, leave him behind you,

   F E
my hurtful eyes try to remind you,

     am G
it's all I can do to keep on screaming

    F E5+ E
'I love you, I love you!' - I wish I were dre - eam-ing,

          em D C B { Em D C B } x3
but the steps we take all leave footprints.

 D G/d D G/d D D G/D D G/d D D G/d D G/d D D G/D D G/d D
Sooner or la - ter the whole thing will be blown

 Fm B/a Fm B/a Fm Fm B/a Fm B/a Fm G/d D G/d D D G/D D G/d D
You will leave him or I'll be left here, alone.

Fm B/d Fm B/d Fm Fm B/d Fm B/d Fm
Either way some-one lo-ses someone (but) (this "but" is not in the official lyrics on Sofa Sound)

G C/d G C/g G G C/g G G/g G A
I don't mind that, I just would quite like to know who we love the most,

                       A
but I guess that's ourselves.

M.A.: Now, for the following few lines up to ("make up the answer"), a special
sequence of notes for each of Am and F chords is played (like pH plays during
his live gigs), or maybe it is about some modified chord? It is similar for all
cases and probably deals with added "2", i.e. Am becomes Aadd2 (a+a#+e), and F
becomes Fadd2 (f+f#+c). Of course, maybe scuh notation is incorrect, but I
didn't want to apply them to Dagmar's transcript. I play them "to and fro" on
piano, but you can try to do something else. Or just ignore it!

     am
The days are strange, at night we're strangers,

F Esus4
lie in bed and lie inside our heads,

                           Esus4/7 E
we come no closer than as dan - cers.

     Am
Your eyes are change, your presence danger,

F
won't look me in the eye and yet

     Esus4 Esus4/7 E
you kiss and make up the an - swer

            am G
to all the questions that lie unanswered, unreasoned,

F E
death in the sky, death in the season,

    am G
if you leave me now, it might nearly kill me

F
  Remember me?

E5+ E
  Remember we three?

Em D C B
It all seemed so important at the time

Em D C B
We came so close to wrecking all our lives

em D C B
And now it's all just song lines...

Em D C B
  Time heals,

Em D C B
  Oh, time heals,

Em D C B Em D C B
time heals... oh, but I still bear the weals...

Em D C B
oh, but I still bear the weals...

Em D C B { Em D C B } x14
oh, but I, oh but I still bear the weals...

*here, the "em D C B" sequence drops down gradually, to "am G F# F E", first the bass notes, then the whole chords*

  am dm am E
Thinking back, it seems that I can lie beside you like I never truly did

   F G am
in afterglow - no afterwords at all.

          am F/a am F/a am G6
(But I'm) Only writing love songs when it's gone and dead,

            F dm/a F dm/a F em
(well, I'm) only paying words out, streamss of half-forgotten sentiment.

F em
I mean... (oh no)

     em F
(no) I meant...

f e f e f b f e f e f b (single notes over an E bass)
I never really quite could say the way it was...
