Peter Hammill - The Light Continent (chords)

Playing tips

An outstanding big-scale composition full of long passages through harmonies
and strange chords, or so they seem to me. Nevertheless, I tried to put down
the base points and chords that I use in my rendition. So take it only as my
humble attempt to enjoy the music.

C#m7 (the main key for the verses)

All the fields that you've overflown are frozen,
they flow like glass down the frame in formlessness.
Only the fragile fluttering of your heart still marks you chosen,
chosen to dare, your face defiant of the featureless.
	Your face defies the featureless,
	you're facing the featureless.

     G# A G# A E
A horizon of light blurs the boundaries of whiteness

        G# A (+B)? G# A E C#m7
as the distance is shimmered into timeless brightness now.

And the slow flooding tide is begun as it's ended -
the barometer dropping and the fog descended
down, down.

In this endless day, at this hour long-appointed,
subterranean humming and the compass unpointed,
the compass disjointed, the compass down.

C#m B C#m
Deep in the core the heart of ice forms,

   C#m B C#m
a tempo of life like that of stalagmites,

    G#(?) B
a flood of the frozen,

      C# B
the flux of the blood

   C#m (F#m) C#m C#m
aflame in an - tarctic white.

     G# A G# A E
Any marks that you made only scratched at the surface

        G# A (+B)? G# A E C#m7
only retinal image ties you into the circuit now.

        G# A G# A E
In this empty expanse every shadow is shining

       G# A (+B)? G# A E C#m7
the indifference of nature: your significance tiny now.

Dive down.

All the fields &c.

 C#m B C#m
Timeless the day, absorbing every wavelength of the light.

  C#m B C#m
Frozen in place, our footfall on the ice.

  C#m C#m F#m
What have our shadows meant

        F#
in the light continent?

F#m (b) (at low notes) C#m
