Playing tips
This song starts with the broken chord, which is something like a-a#-b-c to my ears,
denoted as CHORD. If a better rendition can be offered please do.
Now, in this song one of the impressive fragments is the piano starting on "The sense
of wonder..." etc. Here I just share the way I play it for my pleasure, not pretending
that this is the correct version. With my left hand I play bass notes: d, c, bb, g, and
for each of this bass notes with my right hand I play Dm-based sequence, except that
for the g I play Gm-based one. The sequence I mentioned is based on 1-n-2-n-3-n-4-n
count: I play e-f-a combination at on 1, 2, 3, 4, I play d on "n", and I change it to
Gm-based one, which is e-g combination at 1, 2, 3, 4, and c on "n". You better listen
to the original recording though.

Intro:
CHORD (normal), CHORD (short), CHORD (long)
Am+b G
It was simple, we were man and wife;
Am+b G
something happened to change everything in life
G#m Emaj7
and made us feel small but we were giants nonetheless
F#m Dm+e C+e/c B+e/b G
and here we are all in the family portrait.
Am+b G
I've been sliding in a 2.4-wheel skid:
Am+b G
something happened to me and since the kids
G#m Emaj7
all time's gone awry, direction's askew...
F#m
I never thought that I
E6
would ever feel so used up.
Dm+e/d Dm+e/c Dm+e/bb Gm+c/g
The sense of wonder, the note of panic, demands you just can't ignore
Dm+e/d Dm+e/c
nothing prepares you to be a parent,
Dm+e/bb Gm+c/g CHORD
looking to join the strands of the broken chord.
High notes play theme
What you wanted, what I couldn't give...
something happened to us - oh, but since the kids
inherit the earth
we had to plough and drill the field,
nurture the shoots with our hopes and fears,
never wonder about the future yield.
(Never wonder, never wonder, this is real)
Low notes play theme
I've been thinking about all we did,
much mistaken but anyway, since the kids
are now almost grown with the future in their own hands
what's done is done - there'll be no unmaking our half-baked plans.
Here comes the gold watch, I'll take the pension, I want the lifetime award;
all for the best, with the best of intentions, the children are their own reward...
Since the kids,
since the kids,
since the kids
mended the broken chord.
